We had 34 days in Spain and we can’t yet say that it was the best country we’ll see on
this trip, but it sure beats our rainy exit from the UK. Spain, we’ll miss your chocolate filled croissants, hospitable people and wonderful tarmac (most of the time). Here are some facts and figures from our time in Spain:
- 1718 km cycled (longest day 93 km, shortest day 18 km)
- 1 punctured rear inner tube (Emma’s bike, Justin fixed)
- 17 nights in campsites, 11 nights free camping, 5 nights in real beds
- 62 loaves of Spanish bread consumed (estimated as we had around 2 every day)
- 2.5 Gas canisters used for Primus cooker
- 5 days with some rain (most on longest day!)
- 10.5 chocolate filled croissants eaten between us
- 3 dialects we tried to learn “Hello” in (Spanish, Catalan, Basque)
- 2 Menu del Dias at restaurants eaten
- 1 item of clothing lost (Emma’s sock disappeared from back of bike while drying)
- 23 Mountain passes climbed and descended (Highest puerto de San Glorio 1609m)
Justin’s best day: Cycling from closed campsite free camp at Santa Marina de Valdeon in Picos through two of highest passes to date and then descending to La Vega.
Emma’s best free camp memory: waking up to see the sun rise over Olot at 1000 metres!

We’ve tried to document a typical day’s food intake for two hungry cyclists in Spain. Note we normally wouldn’t have two dinners but this day began with a free camp outside Biescas and ended with an offer of a comfortable bed in Gerbe. – Posted by Emma

It already feels like a long time since we left London. As we sail across the channel and down to Santander, we thought we’d give you some easy to digest stats from our first 4 days from London to Portsmouth. – Posted by Emma + Justin

Here is the first milestone photo, taken 10th April 2010 along the coast heading towards a campsite just outside San Sebastian, Spain. – Posted by Emma

As we set out on a short 40km day towards Tolosa the promise of a comfy bed and spending some time with a Basque family kept our legs happily spinning up the hills. The day was fine, the scenery was rolling hills and Emma’s cafe solo was drunk in a bar with signed Tour de France posters on the wall. – Posted by Justin + Emma

We cycled into Bilbao from our hilltop free camp (where we had our first experience of ticks on the trip so far) using the Garmin Dakota GPS for our first serious piece of city navigation – it performed like a charm. Arriving at the Hostel a little early we circled the block before carrying out some tent-drying/wind-sculpture-art-installation outside the Guggenheim. – Posted by Justin

Hi Guys,
the unthinkable happened and my visa arrived so we jumped a plane and went to Jan’s best friends wedding in Prague for a week. Beautiful. Very exciting to see all of the family and friends. Mum is coming from NZ in 27 days, Chiwi is due in 38 days and all are happy and healthy, I can’t see my feet but have never been happier. Take good care of yourselves, we are always thinking of you. Hey Andrea
(just joking!). Wow passport = freedom, eh. Bet that feels good. We’re pretty excited for your upcoming motherhood – I can’t believe that is so soon.
you were so close but didn’t visit
We have had 6 days off so back on the bicycles tomorrow hopefully.
Keep yourself in good health
x
