We’ve been going a bit slower lately because of the “so hot it cooks your banana in your panniers” summer heat, so this 1000 kilometres sort of crept up on us. After a breakfast of fresh melon, muesli and yoghurt in Novalja (a town on the island of Pag in Croatia), the bicycle computer clicked over to 5000 kilometres as we were taking one last look at the waterfront after early morning espressos. (P.S. planning to find time for a haircut before the next 1000 kilometres!)

4000 Kilometre Photo
After speeding across the flat argenes alongside the Po river we have made it to 4000 kilometres very quickly. This photo was taken on 03 June as we headed East towards Sassoleone through the Appennino hills, climbing just outside Bisano. Unlike the previous 1000km mark on this occasion we weren’t stinky.

As I watched the sun came up over the ocean from the deck of our ferry the size of the mountains ahead made my legs ache in sympathy. The mountains seemed to stretch the length of the coast and extend into the ocean where only their tips were visible in the form of strings of bobbing islands. It was 5:30am and already I could feel the heat of the sun and see small glimmers of heat haze on the bleached white hulls of the becalmed fishing boats as they passed through the wake of the ferry. – Posted by Justin

Hey Tyler – The secret is the black panniers and dripping sweat on them as we cycle in the midday sun. It cleans them up like brand new every day.
I see you guys are now in Russia! Wow! Looks like travelling by car eats up the miles a bit quicker than pedal power.
