Istanbul Cycle Tourists – Jan
Following a bumper month of meeting cycle tourists in December, January proved to be a little less busy with only one pair of cycling house guests and a single evening meet-up. Our recumbent riding house guests gave me a my first ever chance to coast briefly down hill on a recumbent and even with Mike keeping me balanced I felt totally out of control. – Posted by Justin
Supporting Istanbul Football
You can see the bleachers of Ali Sami Yen stadium from our apartment. On our first Sunday it is warm and we eat dinner with the windows open while a match is played. A swell of football chants accompanies each forkful of pasta. We grin at each other. We have six months in Istanbul. – Posted by Emma
9000 Kilometre Photo
At 143 days after our last 1000km photo we’ve finally completed 9000 kilometres on the bicycles. This photo was taken on 22 January 2011 at Rumelifeneri on the Black Sea Coast, auspiciously marking the middle point of our longest and hilliest training ride since settling in Istanbul. – Posted by Emma
Mongolia Cycle Touring Tips
Mongolia has always been a much anticipated destination of our cycle trip. From the point we first opened the pages of the Lonely Planet guide in London and began to fantasize about wide open spaces and a daily routine focused on little more than reaching point ‘B’ from point ‘A’ we have been looking forward to reaching Mongolia. – Posted by Justin
Helpful Kit Companies
After the logistical hassles we had trying to figure out how to get our Hilleberg tent repaired in the EU and returned to Istanbul, we looked at our list of non-critical kit problems and wondered if each of these would be as difficult. We had visions of gear being stung for disproportionately high fees in customs, parcels disappearing or as with Hilleberg finding that companies were unable to provide support outside the EU. But on several accounts, we were in luck. – Posted by Emma
Istanbul Cycle Tourists – Dec
While we only had one couple stay with us, December saw us meet up with the largest number of cycle tourists in Istanbul to date. Most of the people we met were taking their journey slowly and trying to delay moving into colder regions for as long as they could. – Posted by Justin
