Hilleberg Allak

Prior to purchasing our Hilleberg tent we had used a Macpac Celeste for many years and on many different trips including LEJOG in 2009. This was a peg supported dome tent and we loved it with the only thing we disliked being the fact it wasnt free-standing.

When we visited the lovely staff at Alpenstock in Stockport they showed us the Allak and the Nallo GT, as well as giving us a nice cup of tea and lots of advice. The Nallo had a lot more room including a very large vestibule around 2.2m² for around 300gm less weight, however the fact it wasnt free-standing was the decision maker for us so we went with the Allak.

Other tents we considered were:

  • Terra Nova Voyager XL
  • Marmot Aeros - Couldnt find one of these in stores anywhere
  • Macpac Celeste - We would have loved another but they are no longer manufactured.

How has it performed (30/06/2010)? A few weeks back while camping in the snow we got a few holes in our tent however these have now been repaired thanks to some seam sealer from Hilleberg and helpful shipping by Yves and Ingrid to us in Italy. Other than these holes (and some recent tiny holes from a over friendly cat) our tent has been our best friend after our bikes on this trip, we have affectionately nicknamed her Bessie. The tent is surviving daily use extremely well considering 85% of our time is spent outside campgrounds, with no major problems. Touch wood!
